How to Organize a Small Nursery Closet (Under $100)

November 2, 2021 by Jessica Leave a Comment

nursery closet organization

When we were trying to decide which would be the nursery between the two available bedrooms in our house, I was totally sold on the bedroom that had the bigger, double door closet. However, that room was our guest room with a queen bed, and swapping that queen bed to bedroom #3 just wouldn’t work.

So, we went with the bedroom with the smaller closet for the nursery. Cue my brain going into overdrive to figure out how to make this closet work to maximize storage without feeling cluttered.

I knew the closet would store not only clothes but also toys, diapers, wipes, breastfeeding supplies, and tons of other baby things. I wish I had a before pic – there was a rod at about waist level, so we removed that to make room for more valuable shelf space. We considered getting some cube shelving, but getting it into the closet would have been impossible. We even debated assembling it INSIDE the closet (LOL).

I finally decided on this shelving (tough to see in the pic) and ordered these Target bins to go with it. The top shelf has 3 baskets that have made managing rotating her clothing WAY easier:

  • Basket 1: “Too Small” – I toss anything in here that’s too small, and when it fills up I move things to the larger bin that will eventually go into the attic for storage. (PS put a sheet of paper on the inside of the bin detailing what’s in the box, and make a special note if there’s something important. Our 0-6 month box also has the Ollie swaddle (our lifesaver) so I wrote that on the paper as well.)
  • Basket 2: Shoes & Bows – For corralling all those tiny accessories.
  • Basket 3: “Too Big” – I keep all her clothes here that are the next size up so it’s easy to swap them in when it’s time.

Sources

  • Shelving
  • Hangers ($2 at Target!) – similar Amazon
  • Baskets ($6) – similar Amazon
  • Label maker – I use this all over the house too, especially in the pantry.

BONUS: I couldn’t live without these drawer organizers that I popped into her dresser.

I hope this is helpful for all you mamas who need some ideas on how to make your nursery’s small closet work!
